This quote from the great sarcastic comedy "Caddyshack" is the kind of thing that makes me laugh and think at the same time. My blog will be filled with posts about a variety of subjects from music, movies, and sports to random observances from my day to day life. I hope at least one person reads them and is inspired, humored, or maybe even offended.
It's August. Football cleats are being laced up at high schools, universities, and professional training camps around the country. Fields are being cut short and painted up with sidelines, yard numbers, and center-field logos. I personally can't wait to see if my local high school team, the Bowdon Red Devils, and my beloved Georgia Bulldogs have something special that will make Fridays and Saturdays this Fall especially memorable. Maybe the Falcons can make it back-to-back winning seasons for the first time. Being a lifelong Georgia native, I grew up aware of a very special talent that became a staple in Atlanta athletics, Mr. Deion Sanders. This rare species of speed and raw athletic moves wowed Atlantans in Fulton County stadium from April to January in both Braves and Falcons uniforms. Not many young Braves fans are aware that it was Neon Deion that imported the "Tomahawk Chop" from Florida State University. Everyone in Atlanta knew they were witnessing something special when the rookie corner-back returned the first punt he fielded for a touchdown. Yeah, he was flashy and flamboyant. I'm okay with that when you can back it up with results; and Mr. Sanders always did. He refined the position of corner-back. The corner-backs that are being drafted in the first round and paid top dollar today in the NFL owe Primetime a thank you card or at least an end zone dance tribute. I hope Deion is given his NFL Hall of Fame jacket soon and I hope that he goes in as an Atlanta Falcon. (He would be the first.) He has many other cool stats to go along with the high-stepping, end-zone dancing, and cameos in MC Hammer videos. Did you know he is the only player to play in both the World Series and the Super Bowl in the same year? He also had the coolest Nike "Diamond 2 Turf" Cross-trainer sneakers. I could go on and on about this guy. The bottom-line is Deion Sanders deserves more recognition for his NFL career and his contributions to the sports teams of Atlanta. Thanks for the highlights Deion. When it comes to professional sports in Atlanta, it should always be PRIMETIME!
